Helen is the movie soundtrack of your life's troubled moments. This is the music you will hear on your way to fight the aliens after your girlfriend has just left you for another woman. It's soaring and edgy, frantic and dreamlike -- you've heard it everywhere before but never onstage in front of you, chopped up and reassembled like your heart.
Their mix of influences is eclectic but not insane. It will surprise you how it all works so well. Bassist Jon Jose's new wave roots have filtered through his years of experience in indie pop and R&B. Wiggie Bug-os is a guitar chameleon, perfectly comfortable streaming out angry rock, greasy funk and spacey ambience. Drummer Mikah Azurin has played jazz, death metal, pop and drum & bass, and now gets to do it all at once. Jill Dela Torre is kept busy singing and providing random noises and lush atmospheric textures on her guitar. Her airy voice underlines joyful tunes while giving a subtle, disturbing contrast to their songs of obsession and revenge.
It's not possible to describe Helen's music in a few words. Electronica without the electronics? Drum & bass played live by pop musicians? Punk rock in a condo with a bottle of wine? It's easier if you see and hear it for yourself. You'll need it the next time you star in a movie.
